Found this book at the Salone del Mobile few weeks ago. Christien Meindertsma has spent the last three years researching all the products made from a single pig. Amongst some of the more unexpected results were: Ammunition, medicine, photo paper, heart valves, brakes, chewing gum, porcelain, cosmetics, cigarettes, conditioner and even bio diesel.
Meindertsma makes the subject more approachable by reducing everything to the scale of one animal. After it’s death, Pig number 05049 was shipped in parts throughout the world. Some products remain close to their original form and function while others diverge dramatically. In an almost surgical way a pig is dissected in the pages of the book – resulting in a startling photo book where all the products are shown at their true scale (1:1).

Our fellow editor Jean went and talked with the Bamboo Shoots this weekend. Photos by Samuel Peltz in New York City.

Can you guys introduce yourselves as a band?

Karl (bass/vocals), Ankur (beats, synths, percussion), Shiv (drums), Ahmed (guitars/synths), and Avir (guitars/vocals).

What is the story behind the name of Bamboo Shoots?

In the mid nineties, Ahmed survived on a diet of raw Bamboo Shoots. He was lost in the jungle at the time. It was a rough period in his life, he cries a lot just thinking about it.

When did you form your band? What inspired you to make music together? How long have you all known each other? How did you meet?

Avir: Karl, and I have been playing music together since we were little kids. We met Shiv while he was at NYU. Then we met Ankur when he stopped by my house during a practice. We met Ahmed at Karl’s birthday party. It was all very random. We’ve been a band since 2004.

How would you guys describe your music? Who are your influences?

We don’t describe our music, we just play it. I think anything can be an influence if you’re listening right. That and Michael Jackson.

How has your music evolved since you first began playing music together?

I think we started off sounding more funky, back in the day, but now we sound more jagged and lean. It’s also gotten more electro – we have a lot more synths and drum machines on stage. It’s quite a hassle carrying all our equipment around now. The only thing worse than carrying something heavy is carrying something fragile and heavy. But it’s worth it.

Who writes your songs? What are the main themes or topics for most of your songs? Do you think these topics will change over time?

Avir: I write some of the songs, Karl writes some. The band all chips in too. There’s no rules about it. Half the time I don’t even know what the topic is of the song is – even if I wrote it. Sometimes I can only figure out what I was trying to say when I look back on the song a few months later. Then I realize I was expressing something I didn’t even know I was feeling at the time. The topics will definitely change over time, just as we change over time.

Could you briefly describe the music-making and recording process? Who mixes, produces, and edits your guys’ stuff?

Jerry Harrison, of Talking Heads and Modern Lovers, produced our album. Mark “Spike” Stent mixed our album. Eric “ET” Thorngren and Matt “Metal Discipline” Cohen engineered the album. Jerry, while he may be the only one in the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame, is the only one without a nickname.

What are your rehearsals generally like? Do you have a set time each week in which you practice or are rehearsals more spontaneous?
We have a set time for practice (It’s Tuesday’s at 1pm if you really want to know), and then at least one of us will inevitably show up late. Then we spend a good 20 minutes talking about the importance of being timely. So we keep that element of spontanaety – who will be late this week? You never know!

What has been your biggest challenge as a band? Have you been able to overcome that challenge? If so, how?
Staying friends and staying on good terms with each other. When you put 5 boys together you’re always going to have an interesting time. We spend so much time together, we eat together, travel together and play together so there’s a lot of chances for people’s toes to get stepped on. You can only overcome it by always keeping an eye out for each other and trying to be conscientious about what you do and say, and how you treat each other.

What’s your ultimate direction for your band? Are you seeking fame and fortune?
Avir: Yes. I want to be able to wear sunglasses at night, and have that be OK.

What is the most exciting thing that has happened to you guys since Armour has come out?
Touring India. It was amazing.

Where have you performed? What are your favorite and least favorite venues? Do you have any upcoming shows?
Karl: on stages mostly, but thats not a hard and fast rule. we will play pretty much anywhere somebody will have us (and sometimes they even pay us!… just enough for some gas n grub). The cool thing about playing in so many random places as we do is that you can never tell when a show is going to turn into something special. the nicest place with a huge sound system might not be nearly as fun to play as a tiny sushi bar with a karaoke pa system, it all depends on the crowd and how they connect with us. As for upcoming shows, we’re playing an AIDS walk in NYC.

Shiv: Mercury Lounge NYC, Showbox in Seattle, Blue Frog in Mumbai, Nara Sushi in Richmond are some great venues we’ve played at. And some volcano-themed stage in Chicago

Do you have any tour stories to share?

um, we almost got ourselves and our audience locked up in bangalore (india). dancing isnt allowed there, in fact if a band is playing people arent even allowed to stand. when we played, something seemed to pop like a sody bottle top. girls were screaming at beatles concert levels, we couldnt hear ourselves on stage at times. security was coming up to ppl in the audience and threatening to have them arrested, kids were getting up while holding chairs to their asses, it was wild. afterwards we had the aftaparty at our hotel, liquor was bought illegally on the side of an overpass, a fridge was hauled into our room, and singalongs to justin timberlake and oasis songs commenced into the wee hours.

If you could form your ideal tour lineup, what would it be?
It would be us and “Tim and Eric Awesome Show Great Job.” We would play a few songs, they would do a sketch, and we’d go back and forth all night.

What do you guys do when you’re not making music?
We make out.

How can fans-to-be gain access to your music? Do you have a website with sample songs or a demo cd?

Insider tip: we put out a secret mixtape. It’s online and it’s free. It’s called Music for Cotillions. Don’t tell anybody.

Is there anyone you’d like to acknowledge for offering financial or emotional support?
Our parents, for still putting up with us.

What can we expect from you in 2009 and beyond?
we plan on sticking around, like mustache on molester.
