Evan Roth graduated with a MFA in design and technology from The New School at Parsons. He is one of their most notable recent graduates focusing on how to incorporate an interest in popular culture with coding and open source technology. Roth seems to enjoy exploiting the flamboyant nature of popular culture but also involves himself in deep studies of subcultures such as graffiti art. He co-founded the Graffiti Research Lab after working on the Graffiti Analysis project for his thesis. His goal here is to provide “graffiti artists with open source technologies for urban communication.”

Graffiti Analysis 2.0 continues with this iPad to robot to pen to paper demo.

I was introduced to Eric Saeter’s work last year by a mutual friend who knows him from their hometown of Seattle, Washington. It had been awhile since I checked on the progress of his budding design career so I revisited his work to find some nice new additions. Saeter was essentially underwhelmed by what was available in the men’s jewelry world, complaining about a lack of imagination and color. He took matters into his own hands and L’Âge d’Or was born. Lately, he has been experimenting with new material and the result is a collection of some really beautiful and unique works of art.

It has been 2 years since Design and the Elastic Mind was shown at MoMa. I think that the concepts Julia confronts in her creative exploration is not only influenced by her previous degree in science and technology (UCLA), but an example of what Paola Antonelli was trying to demonstrate through her curation of that exhibition. Designers in the 21st Century are constantly being forced to adapt to the way science is shaping our world. To me, design has always been a device for introducing real emotional qualities to the interpretation of information. Listen to Paola speak about Design and the Elastic Mind on Charlie Rose.

Curious Displays was Julia’s MFA thesis project in the Media Design program at Art Center.

The young collective has hit the ground running partly due to its affiliation to the Academy Award-winning powerhouse Digital Domain, whose visual sorcery you may have experienced in films such as Titanic and The Curious Case of Benjamin Button. Through their work, Executive Creative Director Alejandro Lopez says Mothership will demonstrate how “transmedia offers brands the opportunity to integrate directly with entertainment properties instead of standing alongside them.”
