Sharon Van Etten Exclusive Interview

Interview by Laura Lotti.

Sharon Van Etten is a new folk singer songwriter from New York gifted with hauntingly beautiful voice.
Listening to her is a truly life-changing experience.
Her voice is limpid and angelic yet husky and sensual, the lyrics of a disarming simplicity and hypnotic.
After a series of hand-made, tour-only EPs, she’s finally presenting her first full-length album, Because I Was in Love. And that’s how me met here and managed to have a chat with her.
And, besides discovering lots of interesting bits about her music, we found out that she’s actually a lovely person.

Sisters of Transistors Interview

sot

Interview by Laura Lotti.

Manchester has always played a key role in the development of British music history.

Its own strong music tradition startd to grab the World’s attention in the late 70s with Joy Division and A Certain Ratio and reached its climax in the Madchester era thanks to ground-breaking bands the likes of The Stone Roses, Happy Mondays, 808State – just to name a few – and proper “institutions” like The Haçienda and Tony Wilson’s Factory Records. After a few years of silent activity, today there’s a new band to perpetuate this tradition: they are The Sisters of Transistors – 4 “sisters” named Wigby Elka Whippany, Ragna Teisco Dottir, Naomi Doric Pencrest and Henrietta Vox Humana – plus Graham Massey of 808State fame.

From the rather skanky club in East London where we went to see them, they immediately teleported us to other worlds thanks to their obscure yet dreamy and sophisticated melodies and hypnotic choirs. And if even Jarvis Cocker and Ladytron were there in the crowd with us to check them out (no, seriously!), maybe it’s worth listening what they have to say.

Bamboo Shoots Exclusive Interview

10

Our fellow editor Jean went and talked with the Bamboo Shoots this weekend. Photos by Samuel Peltz in New York City.

Can you guys introduce yourselves as a band?

Karl (bass/vocals), Ankur (beats, synths, percussion), Shiv (drums), Ahmed (guitars/synths), and Avir (guitars/vocals).

What is the story behind the name of Bamboo Shoots?

In the mid nineties, Ahmed survived on a diet of raw Bamboo Shoots.  He was lost in the jungle at the time.  It was a rough period in his life, he cries a lot just thinking about it.

When did you form your band? What inspired you to make music together? How long have you all known each other? How did you meet?

Avir:  Karl, and I have been playing music together since we were little kids.  We met Shiv while he was at NYU.  Then we met Ankur when he stopped by my house during a practice.  We met Ahmed at Karl’s birthday party.  It was all very random.  We’ve been a band since 2004.

How would you guys describe your music? Who are your influences?

We don’t describe our music, we just play it.  I think anything can be an influence if you’re listening right.  That and Michael Jackson.
